Is this a common way of saying the weather is getting wet/rainy ? Or just another random duolingo sentence ?

Nope, you can use this to say that the weather is getting wet. But you can also use this to say: "It is raining and my coat is still outside, it is getting wet" (het is aan het regenen en mijn jas ligt nog buiten, hij wordt nat (hij referring to the coat)).
