How does ш differ from щ? And is it just me or does it sound like the audio is saying "Shto-et-se" (three syllables)?

Letter щ is actually two sounds: ш + ч.
It should be just Shcho tse

There is a parasite click in the recording just before "це", no "et". It might have a appeared for a number of reasons (might have been tongue movement or saliva smacking sound).

From a conceptual point of view, the main reason for some undesired sounds is simply the distance between the speaker and the mike. People rarely speak right into your ear—but that's exactly how you record voice talents, because a microphone is usually less than a foot away from their mouth.

Try cranking up the volume. There is an audible click there. On the other hand, I did not pay much attention to it until a user asked (to me, it is pretty obvious in a recording what sentence is being read)

Shady_arc, I understand what you are saying about the 'click'. Is the щ Ukrainian different than it is in Russian.

Can I ask you if there are great grammar differences between Russian and Ukrainian? I've been studying Russian for years, but I've just started with Ukrainian. I am moving to Kiev in August. What are the biggest differences between the two? So far, it seems to be only vocabulary and spelling.

Thanks
