I didn't know that cars have will of their own! Usually it's the driver who has responsibility of what the car they're driving is doing...
I'm pretty sure it's just metonymy.

Even things without will are capable of killing. A tree falling in the forest can still kill a deer, even if no one made it do so.
If the brakes on the car stopped working and the car rolled downhill, then the car that killed the cat.

There is only a small difference between "cat" and "car" and my fingers always seem to type it the wrong way round…
