soft sign vs. apostrophe
I am a bit confused by the fact that both spellings "компьютери" and "комп'ютери" seem to be possible. As far as I understood, "ь" indicates palatalization ('softness') of the consonant before and the apostrophe quite the opposite ('hardness' of the consonant) – see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukrainian_alphabet But in the case of the form for "computer(s)" both signs seem to have the function to separate the "п" [p] (which cannot be soft in general) and the "ю" [yu]. Correct or utter nonsense?
Where have you seen the spelling "компьютери"? This is just not a correct spelling in Ukrainian, we have only "комп'ютери"
… in "Hobby", part 4. I spelt it one way, it was accepted and below it gave the other version as "also correct" (I don't remember which version I wrote). I hope I don't mix up anything. Thank you for your help!
We use the apostrophe in Ukrainian words after "б, п, в, м, ф, р" before "ї, є, ю, я". Exsamples: п'ять, м'ясо, бур'ян, він б'є, комп'ютер....
