Could someone please explain the meaning of this word?

In one of my favourite Cuban songs ever the word 'mulata' is spoken quite a lot. Can anybody give me a definition of this word and say whether it is appropriate to use in general Spanish conversations?

As qwermab answered above, it means mulatto and it is not recommended to use in general Spanish conversations.
