why "det" not "der"?

I know that I've probably should ask this question before, still... is there another word in Norwegian to say "there", instead of using "det" ? :) (like in Danish "der er" ==> "there is..." / "det er" ==> "it is" !)

You can translate 'There is' also as 'Det finnes'.
