Immersion

When, if ever, do you think that the immersion feature will come to the esperanto side of Duolingo? I am eagerly awaiting to translate!

I was really hoping the immersion feature would continue. Bummer.

Not soon and probably never. Duo staff put in pause the development of Immersion. They said

And not even sure the partnerships with companies like BuzzFeed are still existing: the more recent BuzzFeed article I found in FR/EN Immersion is from 30th October 2014...

Do you mind citing that quote? I would like some context for this. I think I have read that article you referenced and my understanding at the time was that they weren't developing new features in immersion. This is entirely different from not importing immersion content for new languages. I also highly doubt that immersion is just being abandoned. The translation feature was supposed to be the back-end revenue generator for their whole business plan, so unless someone decided to just subsidize the site under a grant or something (which is possible, but I haven't read about it) I don't think it is going away. I'm not saying you are wrong, but I don't take your quote as evidence of the conclusion you seem to be drawing.

I would like to hear from one of the Esperanto course developers on this, myself.

Hi,

as a contributor (to ES/FR courses), I can unfortunately assure you that Duo staff has no plan to add Immersion to more courses.

Do you mind citing that quote? I would like some context for this.

it's a quote from a staff member in a discussion internal to the Incubator about the Immersion not being added to more courses and that it seemed to not be developed anymore.

I could have get it wrong but my understanding is that they stopped adding Immersion to more courses.

It seems quite confirmed by the fact that the SP for FR speakers course, which is the 15th course to reach Phase 3, hasn't Immersion and there is no plan to add it.
And my bad German level (and, in fact, my use of Google translate ;)), let me understand it's confirmed by this interview of the co-creator of Duolingo. See the paragraph "Sie setzen auf eine Kooperation mit CNN.":

Wir hätten dieses Geschäftsfeld profitabel ausbauen können, haben uns aber bewusst dagegen entschieden.

With that, it seems that "La messe est dite.", like we say in French. ;)

They seem to have change their business plan (at least abandoned the one based on Immersion and may be still looking for a real good one).
See for example this post by Luis saying that they do not discard having some revenue with some sort of ads.

One extra reason for it (in addition to the reason in the quote) could be legal issues (see the last paragraph in Duo's terms.

EDIT: See also this June 2015 article.

What I would like to see next is vocabulary flashcards like the Spanish course (please, if anyone with any say is reading).

As said, Duo staff stopped the development of Immersion so no chance for anything to be implemented there (at least in the near and middle future, maybe in a far future if they decide to try again to develop it one day).

You can use Memrise or Anki for vocabulary flashcards. I've used both and have a slight preference for memrise.

I really like the immersion feature, where it exists. Does anybody know of a similar feature perhaps elsewhere, on another website?

Not the same in the sense that you have to translate, but if you want immersion consider BliuBliu - you get text tailored to your level of comprehension. (You mark words as "unknown" or "known" and it learns and tries to show you texts from its DB that contain mostly known words and just enough unknown ones that you can often figure them out from context and so slowly grow your vocabulary.)
