Help me please , this is very important for me . Tengo dudas en el uso del was y were.

Se me presento esta duda en estos casos

Tu padre estaba en mi casa. Your father was at my house

Tus padres estaban en mi casa. Your parents were at my house

El articulo es el mismo para ambos casos , pero el verbo to be varia . Me podrian explicar sobre estos casos. The article is the same for both situations . But the verb "to be" has changed. Can you explain me about this situations?.

En el modo indicativo,

"was" es para:

  • sustantivos singulares

  • gerundios

  • los pronombres "I", "he", "she", y "it"

  • "who", "what", y "why"

"were" es para:

  • sustantivos plurales

  • los pronombres "you", "they", y "we"

Tengo unos ejemplos:

"I was dancing with you last week."

"Were you sad yesterday?"

"Your party was fun."

"They were not very friendly."

"Sewing was popular in the 20th century."

El modo subjuntivo es diferente. "Were" es usado en todas situaciones.

"If I were rich, I would be happier."

"If you were poor, I would give you money."

"If the sky were green..."

¡Espero que aprendieras algo!

In English, adjectives do not change in number. They are the same whether the noun is plural or singular.

In these cases, "Your" is an adjective. So "Your father" and "Your parents" are "Tu padre" and "Tus padres." It's like saying "Tall father" and "Tall parents", which are perhaps "Padre alto" and "Padres altos."
