So, I've been searching for a new language to learn, and I thought that latin was a great idea! Most European Languages originate from Latin, so why not? Wouldn't learning this would make European languages easier?
Yes it would help, only with the Romance languages, not all though as Lingophilic has stated.
Latin certainly has its merits, but it's a bit of a stretch to say that most European languages originate from Latin. European languages not descended from Latin include the Germanic, Slavic, Finno-Ugric, Celtic, and Baltic language families, Greek, Albanian, Armenian, Basque, Maltese, and Turkish. These all have some Latinate words, but learning Latin as a way to help you learn, say, Albanian is much less efficient than just learning Albanian, Latinate words and all.
Basque is not Baltic, it's isolate xD It isn't known where it comes from, there are theories that comes from Africa and others... This is why it is so awesome and it should be a course of Basque
My native language (Estonian) is nowhere like Latin, or any other languages in Europe for that matter. Except Finnish and very, very distant from Hungarian. It is apart of the Finno-Ugric language group.
The Romance languages have Latin influence, French being the least. Latin has also heavily influenced English.
It would make learning the Romance languages easier for sure. I don't think the benefit would be as much for Germanic and Slavic languages.
Since you're doing French, you may also want to consider doing Catalan. Its like a mix of French and Spanish. I think its so cool, the ease and flair of Spanish with the beauty of French.
OK I'll stop now before I creep the other Duolingoers out.
Yes, Latin would help immensely with Romance languages (notice how I didn't say European languages, because not all European languages are derived from Latin) but the thing is, Latin is a dead language. Nobody in the world, with the exception of the Vatican, uses it anymore.
It is also a very difficult language to learn. From Wikipedia's page on Latin:
Latin is a highly inflected language, with three distinct genders, seven noun cases, four verb conjugations, six tenses, three persons, three moods, two voices, two aspects, and two numbers.
yo pienso que podriamos aprender latin porque ayudaria a apprender: espanol italiano etc
