what about homoj instead of popoloj

Yes. The two words 'homo' and 'popolo' seem to be used interechangeably, yet the plural of person (homo) is persons (homoj) and the collective noun 'people' (sing.) (popolo) seems to have a plural. I'm not saying Esperanto has to have direct equivalents to English (all languages have their own peculiarities) but I would have more confidence in Esperanto if I could see consistency and sublty; perhaps I just need to spend longer with it.
