One day (hopefully the near future) I will understand every word in that article. Right now I just get the gist of some of it and am clueless on other parts.

I find that reading factual items is a good way to practice. Are there any parts specifically that are giving you problems?

No, it's just a lack of vocabulary that's working against me.

Lernu.net has a dictionary that I find very useful. It offers the translation of the full word and then breaks if down into steam(s) and affix(es). You might want to try is sometime.

You can go to lernu.net, try to do the basic exam and if you succeed, you can request one free issue of Esperanto magazine. I recommend "Kontakto", because there are also articles in "basic Esperanto", so using limited vocabulary ;)

Free magazine? Like paper and stuff?

I'm on Lernu.net for few months now, didn't really got into their courses and I've never heard about that. Could you elaborate?

Go to this page http://en.lernu.net/mia_lernu/ekzamenoj/ekzamenoj.php, take an exam (nivelo A) and if you pass, you can leave your contact information where the magazine will be sent.

I also like http://www.simplavortaro.org/ works over the same underlying data, but with a different search interface that's pretty good at guessing la konstruon de kunmetitaj vortoj

Ekrigardu tiun retpaĝon. Ĉi tie oni trovas informon, ke lastjare la nombro de esperantaj parolantoj estis taksata je pli ol 2 milionoj, bazante sur la nombro de uzantoj de Fejsbuko, kiuj elektis esperanton kiel la ĉeflingvo de paĝo aŭ kiuj indikis, ke ili parolas esperanton.
