The New Male French Voice
I'm diggin' on that. Nice work, Duo team. :)
Personally, I can't stand it. I think having multiple voices is a great idea, but this guy's pronunciation is like nails on a chalkboard and pretty much the exact opposite of what I would want in an accent for myself. Even the way he says "oui" sounds like the product of food poisoning. If I had known that I'd have to endure his pronunciation every day I probably wouldn't have started with Duolingo at all, and my 30 XP a day are currently more of a chore than fun now that his voice is a permanent fixture. I had about seven great weeks without him, and now meeting my daily goal is a slow, plodding and agonizing chore. Every time I hear that voice I ask myself if it's worth it to go on with this, and every day it's harder and harder to reply in the affirmative.
I can't stand the new male voice either and find it very grating. Doing my daily lessons is going to get harder and harder if I have to listen to him. I hope they find a way to give us a choice, or I'm going to be forced to turn off the sound.
Personally, I enjoy the voice, but I think you should have the ability to avoid the voice if you so choose. I think that it would be a great idea to choose between the male and female voices in the user options. I'll send them an email on your behalf; maybe they'll look into making it happen.
Thank you. Spend your new lingot wisely :)
I truly hate to complain about a free service, but that guy's voice rubs me the wrong way so hard that I'm actively trying to make sure I don't pick up his accent, and I'm not the only person to have posted such a comment (at least one other person said the male speaker's voice is exactly what that person wants to avoid accent-wise). When I'm done with my daily Duolingo work, I now listen to my old Drive-In French tapes just to erase the new male speaker's accent from my mind. I seriously find his pronunciation that horrifying.
Whether you succeed in getting them to allow me to eliminate his voice or not, your efforts are appreciated.
I couldn't stand the male voice either so I disabled voice autoplay, but I really miss the female voice now.
Same here. I wish I could have the female voice back but it's not worth subjecting myself to the male one. I'd rather not speak French at all than pick up an accent which makes me sound like I'm trying to suppress vomit every other syllable.
Mine keeps switching between the male and female voices. Also the Italian and Spanish don't have an option for a male voice (at least that I've heard).
I was about to write about that!!!!! My dou acount uses both voices for one lesson
Yes, switching back and forth. I hope we get the option to pick which voice. I'm so used to the female that I'm having trouble understanding the male.
I got him for the first time today... tons of people complained about the German male voice, but the French one is fine, yay!
Don't nobody laugh but I was not expecting to hear that male voice--jumped right out of my seat; scared the calm right out of me!! After all this time with Madame, Monsieur is going to take some getting used to/a new ear is required I think!
I like the new voice (I am new to this course) because it's clear, and I can understand what he says like he's in front of me. They need to work on the female voice, though, because it still sounds like an AM radio broadcast that I can't hear clearly. Hopefully Duo will add more voices, so that we're aware of how different French voices or accents sound.
