What is the difference between "Du" and "Ihr"?

For example, Ihr trinkt means you drink but Du trinkst also means you drink. What is the difference and how do you tell them apart?

"Du" is singular you and "Ihr" is plural you. In English we use the same word (you) for both plural and singular. "Ihr" also has other meanings, but I haven't wrapped my head around those yet so I'll let someone else elaborate.
