what is wrong with saying "the guitar" as oppose to just "guitar"

Is the following accurate?

  • violão = acoustic guitar
  • guitarra = electric guitar

That's what a few of my Brazilian friends have told me.

Also, if you do an image search for "violão" vs "guitarra", it confirms this.

Also common just to say play guitar in England

shouldn't it be "como tocar"? This seems like it should be translated as "she knows to play the guitar".

In English "how to" is necessary, but in Portuguese it's optional (and avoided).

If you use it, you put a real ehmphasis on "how to".

  • Você sabe como tocar? - Do you know how to play? - Do you know what you have to do in order to play? Do you know the right way of playing?
  • Esse sabe como tocar um violão! - Now this man knows how to play the guitar
