Duolingo is the most popular way to learn languages in the world. Best of all, it's 100% free!

Finding out your language level

Today I came across a website to check one's Spanish level (A1, A2, B1, etc.) ( http://ave.cervantes.es/prueba_nivel/registro/test_de_clasificacion.php?origen=webAVE ). I must say that I'm quite skeptical about any tests online but I wanted to give a try. After all, I've almost finished my Spanish tree and I have 53% fluency, according to Duo.

There was 30 abcd questions, then a reading task and a listening task. It was quite hard but to my surprise I was told I'm B1.1–B1.2. Well, I expected A2 because I feel quite comfortable but not B1!

Have you done any language level evaluation tests online? How reliable are they? Can you reach B1 with Duolingo? I suppose that having strong A2 after Duolingo course is definitely the highest you can reach. What do you think guys?

I'm familiar with that particular test. It's the one the Instituto Cervantes uses for placement in its online course. If you go to a branch of the institute where they teach actual Spanish courses then they will give you a different test, which also evaluates your writing and speaking. The results are likely to be quite different if you've mostly learned the language passively. At least they were for me. I think A2 is probably a reasonable guess for what you would get on that test.

I think that you have to keep practicing. It will make a small difference if you go through the tree once, but you have to keep practicing until you get 100%

It was officially confirmed that it's impossible to reach 100% fluency in Duo but I'll keep trying, thanks :)

You definitely won't get 100% from Duolingo, it won't even get advanced spanish, think of how many years you have been learning your native language, even after 6monhts+ of full immersion most people I know aren't fluent, yes you can can by and understand way more but most likely only about certain subjects not fluent like you are in your own language. I think the highest the fluency shield has been for some people is just under 60% but that definitely doesn't translate to the real world.

B2 is a fine level! Well done! I took this test about a year ago, it gave me C1.1 -C1.2. My Spanish skills have improved since then but nevertheless, DuoLingo recently gave me level 5 on a placement test. Now I have to redo a lot of lessons such as clothes, sizes and stuff, but still it's a lot of fun :)

Thanks for sharing this. It was a good challenge. I ended up with B2.2-B2.3.

Oh and I had 60 multiple choice questions instead of 30. I saw on the bottom in fine print it said something about being either 30 or 60 questions, but I was too focused on the questions to pay attention to what it said about it or if it said why it varied.

I've done that test and got C1.1 - C1.2.

But, it is a placement test for the level you should be studying. So, my level of accomplishment is probably B2. So, for your level is probably more like A2.

It thinks I'm C1.3-C1.4! Not the first test that's put me in the C levels - I guess they like that I can do subjunctive well. I'm probably somewhere between B1 and B2. =/

I'm just going to go laugh in the corner for a bit. And silently dread having to take one of these things for real this fall and get placed way above my actual level.
