Which or what? Which is the problem? or What is the problem? How do you know the difference?

I do not understand the difference between these wh questions.How do you know if it is correct or not?

We use "which" when asking for a selection between 2 or more discrete options.

  • (me, showing 2 apples to somebody) Which apple do you want?
  • Which kid (out of your 3) is your favorite?

Honestly though, "what" is very common even in this context. When in doubt, use "what". You'll never be wrong that way, it's just that questions with explicit choices sound a little better with "which".

Generalmente "which" = "cuál" y "what" = "qué", pero hay excepciónes.

There are very many exceptions, I would say. In my experience "What" is much more common in English than "Qué" in Spanish.
