In the app.I typed 'nous ne les avons pas cru' when asked to type what I heard. This was marked wrong, why?

Because the participe cru has to agree with les, which replaces the object of the sentece. Les is plural, so the participe has to be crus or crues. :-)

In this case, the past participle needed an s, so it was crus or crues, depending on who "les" was referring to. It's a tricky rule, many native French speakers do this mistake.

I see thank you. It's the preceding direct object rule.

When the object, in this case "les", precedes the past participle, in this case "cru", the past participle should agree with it in gender and number, so the possibilities here are "crus" and "crues", since "les" is plural, but of indeterminate gender.

Edit: Note, this rule does not apply when the object comes after the participle. Then the participle is always masculine singular.
