How does Duolingo figure out if there is a typo in a answer?

I am learning French from English. I had to write, "I play with your dog", while i had a typo and wrote "I play with you dog". This was not marked as typo. While the other day, I wrote a sentence which I felt was wrong but Duo considered it a typo. So, how does Duolingo figure out if there is a typo in an answer?

I guess it's a typo when you write one letter wrong in the word but the wrong word does not have different meaning. Therefore writing "you" instead of "your" is wrong, but writing "emperedado" instead of "emparedado" is just a typo.

This is my experience too. Of course it will never be perfect because Duo can't know what you meant to write, but I think it gets it right more often than not.

The most annoying point with typos is that they seem to ignore punctuation completely. When I start typing quickly to answer questions, I've been known to type ",e" instead of "me", which counts as a typo because it just sees the "e"...

I faced the same thing today. I wrote "she demonstrates us that sh knows recipes" instead of "she demonstrates us that she knows recipes" and it was marked wrong. :(

sincerebanana: It could also be that you forgot "to us". In English you do not "demonstrate us", you demonstrate "to us".

Most likely, Duolingo has a variety of commonly misspelled variants of the words and if your word is one of those variants it is considered a typo. Otherwise it is counted as wrong.
