Tomorrow, October 9th, we will introduce the Duolingo Language Incubator, a way for the community to create language courses. With your help, Duolingo will soon be available in every language -- Chinese, Japanese, Russian... maybe even Elvish. All 100% free.

At first, you'll be able to build courses to learn English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese from ANY other language in the world. And before the end of the year, it will be possible to create courses in all combinations of languages.

Duolingo: for the people, and very soon, BY the people.

Each of the existing Duolingo courses took several months and many human hours to develop by the duo-team. The new courses will take a similar amount of time, distributed among several developers, so the quality and the incubation time depends actually on the number of people that will volunteer their time and knowledge, and how well they can collaborate together. On the other hand, I trust that the duo-team will not permit low quality courses to be released...

Yes, that is great idea. It is so easy that probably after learning it for a while, you won't have troubles to use it as a base. I honestly can admit that sometimes I got problems with English in my answers as they are not gramaticaly correct or I lack appropriate word. Maybe this could be solved by using Esperanto. I'll definitely give it a try :)

10/9/2013, 11:35:56 AM

https://www.duolingo.com/NewtonWren

With English there's no easy shortcuts for grammar, you just need to memorise it. Vocabulary is the same for every language, just read a lot, listen a lot, and if you really want to know a lot of words then learn to love your dictionary and thesaurus. By all means learn other languages, but if you want to improve in one language then find an author you like and start reading.

10/9/2013, 11:52:50 AM

You'll be able to create courses from Esperanto to English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese.

The brain can handle more than you ever imagined. We don't need to worry that your brain can't handle it. You can learn as many languages as you want and have time for during your lifetime. Your brain can handle each and distinguish them properly. Our brains are pretty amazing computers. :) The only question is time. How much time do we need to accomplish this? :) That's the big question. I speak Swedish, Polish, English fluently. I speak some German and some Arabic. My aim is to gain fluency in Arabic. I already have an accent like a native.

10/9/2013, 1:02:56 AM

https://www.duolingo.com/Suptime

Thank you for that information, I guess you're right, I'm 23 years old and I speak English French smoothly and some Spanish (we learn fast when we have the will), by the way I can help you out with Arabic, It's my native language.

You're right. The most important thing is to have fun while learning. The brain handles information better that way. Therefore Duolingo is a great learning tool since they are gamifying learning. =) I would recommend using Duolingo in combination with a similar website called memrise which is a tool to help you memorize huge chunks of words. The best thing is that it will remind you of words just at the right moment when your brain is about to forget it. That's the best scientifically proven method to strengthen your vocabulary.

Sorry to interrupt the euphoria party with with some reality.. but this won't be the bee's knee's from the get go. It will start small, and only through the collective hard work, will it become the most awesome thing ever.

See this less as a gift, and more as an opportunity to give something to the word... or at least that part of the world has has access to computers and high speed internet connections..

10/8/2013, 6:12:13 PM

Read the opening post and you'll understand.

"At first, you'll be able to build courses to learn English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese from ANY other language in the world. And before the end of the year, it will be possible to create courses in all combinations of languages."

So no courses for learning Danish, Icelandic, Korean, etc. can be built until later this year.

Sadly you're right, but I meant that I will be adding Danish as a native possibility to learn from! After that it's just a small step to actually learn conversing in the Danish tongue!

I think a lot of you guys are getting the wrong impression. You won't be able to start making courses for any language tomorrow.

"At first, you'll be able to build courses to learn English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese from any other language in the world. And before the end of the year, it will be possible to create courses in all combinations of languages."

10/8/2013, 6:37:03 PM

https://www.duolingo.com/robertofrega

So people can't be excited for something that is going to happen by the end of the year?

10/8/2013, 7:51:03 PM

Where in the world did I say that or even imply that? You just made that up.

I simply said what I said because it's true. Look around this thread and you'll see people who think that tomorrow people will be able to build courses for any combination of languages.

At the moment, the Spanish and Portuguese courses on Duolingo are more geared toward the Latin American varieties. With the language incubator, will we be able to create courses specifically dedicated towards the European varieties for those that want to learn it? Or will the course be more a meld of both? And of course, this question also applies to different languages with significant regional differences as well, like Mandarin Chinese vs. Cantonese

I've commented on that previously - I think it would be a great idea. Or perhaps a "branch" off of the tree for dialectical differences when the dialects do not vary wildly from the main.

All Arabic speakers that know arabic well, please add me so that we can make Arabic available. ;) Arabic has many dialects. Duolingo should focus on teaching MSA Arabic. It's the formal arabic that they speak on the news and it's understood by all arabs.

I think that'll be dependent on the Arabic-speaking users who want to work on it. I'd love to learn MSA down the road - I'd also like to learn Levantine Arabic in specific though, so the more specific dialects shouldn't be ignored either.

You'll be able to create courses FROM Gaelic TO English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese.

The other way around will be available soon, though. Probably by the end of they year :)

Probably won't happen for a while, since not very many people know Elvish or Klingon yet. But that will probably change soon! :D

I think it would be especially fun if somebody made an Elvish to Klingon tree, and never made an English to Klingon tree. The only way to learn Klingon would be to learn Elvish first. That could turn out very interesting, I think!

That already happens with physical books. Assimil publish a lot of language learning materials that aren't covered by the English speaking world, so if you want to learn Tamil, Roma, or Breton, then you need to learn French first.

This is probably out there for saying, but I wonder if pig Latin has made it as a bonus skill for English, English is my first language so I have not checked myself. Learning pig Latin would be easy (if you know English), it would have to be a bonus skill or bonus/for fun language. American sign language would be another one of those languages that may be more of a bonus language (for English speakers) cause it would be more visual learning because it's all about body language, but this would be a great thing to learn for to help those that are hearing impaired. There are also some languages that are mainly used in certain religions or cultures as well. I could go into which have them, but that comes closer to sliding off topic

All of these could be taught in other languages as well Sign language is a great thing to have even if you don't know someone that is hearing impaired. If you have friends that learn it as well, you could use it for talking in places with loud music where yelling is one of your only options, it also lowers the chances of you embarrassing yourself trying to yell to someone and the music stops suddenly or someone gets irritated because you are yelling when they are trying to listen the the music.

Well, there's my two cents, I hope I did not waste them!
