How do you become a moderator?

I'm wondering this. Do you just have to be really good at all the languages, or is it something else? And what's the difference between an expert and a moderator? What can you do as a moderator?

Duolingo moderators are all very active in the discussions. They are savvy at a particular language or two or three :) They welcome and help other language learners. Moderators get recognized with a star on their picture. They have some mod rights like being able to delete comments that do not uphold our Community Guidelines that you can read more about here: http://www.duolingo.com/guidelines. We're going to continue building out our mod program and are always on the search for more mods. :)

Moderators used to have a green star on their picture, but they can currently be recognised by the green M next to their name.

Would any person who helps add a language become a moderator because that person knows the language well, or does the Duolingo community only pick out specific people to become moderators?

Here is the discussion that originally introduced moderators: www.duolingo.com/comment/304702

You might want to wait with your questions until the introduction of the Language Incubator as moderator and expert roles could change once users are able to add language material.
