I believe that "mais" and "mes" are phonetically identical. You could argue that lifting the pitch at the end suggests a question, thus suggests "mais" instead of "mes," but c'mon....

there should be a slight difference in the audio, but without a direct comparison it is more or less impossible for a not native speaker.... as always...in a real conversation there would be a context... ^^

"But?" is grammatically (and dramatically) incorrect. Saying "May?" would make sense in a common discussion.
