Klingon, Elvish, Na'vi, Esperanto... what other invented languages do you want to learn on Duolingo?

Let's make a list of them - if they are a bit more uncommon please explain their origin (a book, inventor etc.).

Fictional Languages

  • Dothraki - "Game of Thrones"
  • Elvish - "Lord of the Rings"
  • Gallifreyan - "Doctor Who"
  • Hylian - "The Legend of Zelda"
  • Klingon - "Star Trek"
  • Na'vi - "Avatar"
  • ... and others!

I just applied to help create an Esperanto to English course. I would definitely like to see a Lojban course. Perhaps I could convince some of the Lojbanists on Facebook and Reddit to help out :)

https://www.duolingo.com/PatrickBrett1

I applied for the Eo-En course too with my limited knowledge of the language... Hope to get it going to the point of exceeding lernu.net, which works but only just. I've had trouble learning Esperanto online so a Duo course would be great.

I've applied for eo-en too. I am probably not qualified enough, but I am happy to see that its delay is hardly for lack of applicants. I also would love to take Esperanto courses on Duolingo, I am hopeful it won't be long.

Excellent idea. Easy and horrible at the same time. :D What I hate about it (and the entire novel) is how it sucked the life out of everything. Horrid book. Still read it twice. :)

Westron from Tolkien's Middle Earth, and the Ancient Language from Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Cycle book series.

https://www.duolingo.com/castrohernando

It'll be awesome to learn the language from Inherintance Cycle, I have the books and at the end of every one of them they have a little translation from the words that appear in each book. So it will be easy to make a vocabulary database for the Ancient Language and the other languages that appear in this saga.

https://www.duolingo.com/kaybird13

Hurray, a fellow fan! I love the translation/vocab sheets at the end of the books. You'd have to really develop it to make it fluently speakable though... Still, yes, would be awesome. :)

https://www.duolingo.com/castrohernando

Maybe we could get a talk with Christopher and he could continue developing the language and that would give a new perspective to Duolingo!

https://www.duolingo.com/kaybird13

Oh my gosh yes, that would be awesome! It would also work if some -intense- fans really started free-hand developing the language (with Paolini's permission of course). It would take a while but might be faster.

Unfortunately, I don't think a Westron course is possible. Tolkien didn't really develop it.

"Yerkish" could be interesting. It's a written-only conlang developed by animal language researchers to be taught to apes (or really any animals with the dexterity to use the keyboard).

Yerkish is an artificial language developed for use by non-human primates. It employs a keyboard whose keys contain lexigrams, symbols corresponding to objects or ideas.[1] (From: Wikipedia)

Sorry, but said language was never developed. Like, at all. They always spoke English in the show. The only thing that exists are fanmade imitations of gallifreyan-looking writing systems (made for English). Check out www.reddit.com/r/Gallifreyan for more info.

https://www.duolingo.com/marcownz747

The reason that people are asking for things like Elvish is because Elvish was a language actually developed by Tolkein. Grammar rules, vocabulary, everything. Gallifreyan is a fictional language in that it is mentioned (but was never developed at all). Any use of it in Doctor Who (cannon or otherwise) had no rules and was likely gibberish or borrowed language.

Quenya and Sindarin =) Maybe we can add Adunaic also. However, elvish writing system is developed for each language (example, we have tengwar adjusted to Croatian phonetic system and rules so it would be difficult to create one as international standard...but I'm probably wrong, But that's about writing, using latin alphabet like "mae govanen" shouldn't be a problem)
