Hi everyone! Happy Monday :)

Today, We are going to examine two similar structures that involve words Más vale que.

Structures:

Más vale que + { subjunctive }
Más { indirect object pronoun } + vale que + { subjunctive }

The first impersonal structure can be translated to English as: It is better (worth more) that. The second one can be translated as either as It is better (worth more) for you/he/she/they that. Note that other translations that flow or sound better in English are possible. For example, instead of saying 'it is better for you that ...' you might say 'You better ...'

Also note that the first one is a somewhat fancier alternative to another impersonal opinion structure Es mejor que. I intend to cover that group of impersonal expressions another day but just wanted to give a heads up for now.

Although much less common you might also see past, future and conditional forms of the verb valer in the expressions as well.

Examples:

Más vale que estudiemos español un poco cada día - It is better that we study Spanish every day / It is better for us to study Spanish every day
Más vale que haya sido así, y no al revés - It's better that it has been like this and not the other way around
Más vale que sea pronto - It's better that it's done soon
Más vale que cumplas - It's better that you comply / It's better for you to comply
Más te vale que cumplas! - It's better for you that you comply / You better comply!
Más vale que vayas ahora! - It's better that you go now / It's better for you to go now!
Más te vale que vayas ahora! - It's better for you that you go now / You better go now!
Más vale que te vayas ahora! - It's better that you leave now / It's better for you to leave now!
Más te vale que te vayas ahora! - It's better for you that you leave now / You better leave now!
Más te vale que no lo hagas - It's better for you that you don't do it / You better don't do it!

Here is a complex one. The structure I've outlined above is still here. I've highlighted the parts for you to recognize easily:

Más le vale a un hombre tener la boca cerrada, y que los demás le crean tonto, que abrirla y que los demás se convenzan de que lo es. (Pitágoras de Samos)

It is better for a man to have the mouth shut and that the others think he is stupid than open his mouth and the others convince themselves that it is so.
