Connecting Object Pronouns

I know that in certain situations, you can choose between attaching an object pronoun to a verb or not doing so. (Ex: Voy a hacerlo / lo voy a hacer). My question is, which is more common? Also, does it ever change the meaning of what is being said? Thanks!

They have the same meaning and they are equally used.

I second that opinion. This is what I was told by my Spanish teacher from Peru.

I don't think it changes the connotation or tone. StudySpanish says that neither is better than the other, and I'm looking at one of my classroom handouts that says the same thing. I'd be interested in the thoughts of native speakers, though!

FWIW, in imperatives/commands, the object pronoun always goes on the end. So there's that pattern.
