This might seem a bit silly, but why do we need to include 'está'? Why can it just be 'el elefante bebiendo agua'?

Hello, arwennugteren. The "presente continuo" tense in Spanish is always formed with "estar" and the "gerundio".

  • I am drinking. -------------> (Yo) Estoy bebiendo.
  • He is drinking. -------------> (Él) Está bebiendo.
  • The elephant is drinking. --> El elefante está bebiendo.
    • I am eating. -------..-----> (Yo) Estoy comiendo.
    • He is eating. -------------> (Él) Está comiendo.
    • The elephant is eating. --> El elefante está comiendo.
