Le and les

How is one supposed to differentiate between 'le' and 'les' while listening to someone?

"le" sounds more like "lyo" while "les" is clearly "leh". There are also other tricks:

  • In Duolingo "dictation" exercises, turn on the slower option. With this, "le" sounds almost like "l" while "les" stays "leh".

  • When the noun starts with a vowel, you hear the "z" of "les", like in "les enfants" (lez-ahn-fahn).

  • You can also figure out the article by the context. For example, if you hear "Les poissons sont petits", you know it is plural because of "sont", so the article can't be "le".
