Is it not also correct to remove the word "є" from this sentence and just say, "у мене журнал"?

Without "є" which indicates "to have" here, it becomes a "to be" sentence: У мене журнал = Журнал у мене = "The magazine is by me" kinda.

OK, another angle: У мене є журнал is like "What do you have?" and У мене журнал is like "Where is the magazine?"

Журнал sounds like "Journal"... It must be loanwords!

Yep!

Borrowed from French journal, from Latin diurnālis, from diēs (“day”).

In Italian "giornale" means "newspaper", and giorno = day.
