Bad font or bad eyesight?

I find the Spanish accent on the letter i very hard to distinguish from the dot on top of the i. Is it just my eyesight, or is the font used particularly bad at distinguishing these things?

Not your eyesight. Two adjustments Duo really needs to make to its stylesheet are (1) change the typeface to one that has more prominent diacritics and (2) make text black—non green, black. A while back a Duo user put up a link to plugin for users of Chrome that changed the green text to black. Very useful, but it has quit working for me. If I can find his post, I'll link to it.

Is it Duolingo Dark perchance?

That link also talks a bit about the Stylish plugins, which can be used to change any website's look and feel. I don't know easy it is to make modifications, but it sounds like something that's easy enough for someone to take on.

No, the file names are duolingo.css and manifest.json, and the css is much more basic than that of Duolingo Dark (it styles only the font size and color). I don't remember where I downloaded it or who the Duo user is who created it. Anyway, you're right—it's easy to install a plugin and modify stylesheets.

I just added an extension to Chrome called Stylish (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/stylish/fjnbnpbmkenffdnngjfgmeleoegfcffe/related?hl=en) and added my own style:

  • { font-family: "Adobe Caslon Pro" !important; }

I limited this to Duolingo. It works. The corrections are in black and the acute accent shows up clearly. I had played around with font families some time ago and found that either Adobe Caslon Pro or Iowan Old Style have prominent acute accents. These might not work so well with other diacritics, though, but I'll deal with that as needed.

Instructions are here: http://www.itsupportguides.com/computer-accessibility/how-to-use-a-custom-style-sheet-css-with-google-chrome/

Agreed! The accents are incredibly hard to see. There must be a better font.

Duo's font makes it particularly difficult to distinguish when an accent mark is being used.

This would make a lot of sense why distinguishing words for me would be a problem. Sometimes I will see a word and think that there isn't any difference with it, and that really makes things annoying.

I agree completely.

In my case, it's probably both the font and my eyesight! The accents are quite hard to see. I have a Mac and sometimes expand the screen so that I can see the accents if I'm not sure... and have considered getting a magnifying glass too. You are not the only one to complain. I do hope they make it a priority to fix this. Clarity is more important than style in this case.

I agree. The font is terrible. San serif fonts are generally harder to read than those with serifs - most books are printed in a serif font. Black text would help.

Yes, depends on the word and the font. In lang-8 it's really annoying to read "difícil" and that's a normal/common word. But they aren't that many so when you know the most used words (or the rules to put the accent) you will be fine.

I also can't make out the Spanish accent over the letter i very well. And it's even worse trying to read Swedish.
