I've been using Duo since last year. Since I discovered it, I haven't spent a single day away from it. For 470 days I have faithfully used Duolingo. This year has been tough - I've been working full time, sometimes double shifts, and there were far too many days when I only scored a few XP just to extend my streak. This week I took a short break to a gorgeous location with no mobile service or internet access, and as a result, I sacrificed my streak. It's sad to see a little 0 where that 470 used to stand. It wasn't easy to achieve, and it won't be to achieve it again, but it's also a relief to not have that pressure anymore. The streak is such a wonderful motivator, it kept me going for 470 days, which may be the longest I've ever stuck to anything. Thank you Duo, I can't wait for another 470 days with you!

Always sad to see such a long streak vanish. That is why the streak should be the number of days a person was active on duolingo, not continuous days. One should not be penalized for having a life.

I agree, but the streak should also remain, because its a huge motivation ;)

Nah, but you should be able to buy a longer streak freeze... maybe for like 200 lingots What else are we going to use those for.

Lingots are very useful for rewarding good post. This month I gave more than 100 of them for great questions or replies or posts. I still have around 950, but I will give everything to great posters.

You'll get there again, as it sounds as if you are really motivated. I remember losing my first 150 day streak (when my husband broke his arm and we were in A&E..I really didn't feel I could sit there doing my languages when everyone was in so much pain and distress there!!). Anyway, I started again, and am now at 653 days. You'll soon be back in the hundreds...let us know when you are! Good luck.

I'm all in favour of the Streak concept - it certainly encourages me to practice more. But my nearest and dearest don't always see why it is so important to me (particularly at weekends) - and I don't have a commute during which to do DL. So I think it ought to be more flexible - like having the ability to purchase longer Streak Freezes (with the cost in Lingots going up exponentially!)

I would love longer streak freezes. I have so many lingots I have nothing else to do with, I would happily pay big for a long streak freeze. And the people who had enough lingots would be those who had been on Duo a long time, I think it would make sense.

I only discovered a few days back that you can now buy a "Streak Freeze" with your (otherwise fairly useless) Lingots, that allows you to have a day off. It's usually weekends when I fall down ...

I had completely forgotten about my streak freeze. I had one that I purchased long ago and forgot about because I hadn't needed it. It bought me an extra day but sadly I was offline for too long. Ha ha, weekends are usually the time I get to do the most on Duo :)

I lost a streak of 421 days a while back when I got really, really sick. It is kind of sad seeing all those one-year-plus streaks and thinking "That used to be me" but so far building the new streak is WAY easier than building the first one was. I think because Duo is just a habit now, part of my life. I remember with my first long streak thinking "Wow, I might actually make it to 100 days!" and here I am somewhere over 70 (I don't really pay attention now, except to make sure the green check mark registers so Duo knows I've met my goal).

So yeah, a bit sad but in the end not such a big deal after all.
It sounds like you needed that break more than you needed a streak on a website.

470 is a big number. I almost lost my mind when I lost my 100+ days streak last year. I kind of lost all the motivation and stopped learning the language. But I started again, at 94 days streak now, aiming for 150. I am always equipped with a Streak Freeze, so that it keeps the streak alive even if I miss a day. But it's surely of no help if you're on vacation. I guess Duolingo should have 7/15 days streak freezes. I am ready to pay lingots but I can't afford to lose my streak!

I've been worried that when I lost my big streak I would lose motivation, but I think it has done the opposite - I'm fuelled with energy to get that streak back! I agree, longer streak freezes would be ideal.

I've been really worried about losing it, I thought it would completely demotivate me. It's only been a couple of days back on my streak, but so far it has done the opposite. I'm extra motivated. I spent the day re-golding my German tree (which was in desperate need for it), and I'm really keen for moving ahead with my other trees. And as soon as that number starts building up again I'll have that same desperate need to not lose it.
