Spanish Book Club on Duolingo

wazzie
  • 25
  • 11

Last summer a couple of users here started a book club where we read a book in Spanish together and discussed it.
By popular demand, it is being started up again.

Starting next week, we will start with chapter 1 of El León, La Bruja y El Ropero (The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe). The goal is to read this book in Spanish and discuss it here also in Spanish. The idea is to build a community of support and motivation while using our growing skills in Spanish to communicate.

The discussions will be primarily in Spanish, but will allow for English when needed. In an effort to accommodate all levels, if you are not comfortable discussing in Spanish, you may read the book in Spanish and use the discussion area to ask questions about any issues may come across and of course, follow along with discussion. Additionally, if you would rather read the English version of the book and participate in the Spanish discussions, you are welcome to do that as well.

The first chapter is available here. You can click on the picture of the book and read the sample (which includes the entire first chapter and part of the second). I think this is a good place to start and allows time for everyone to obtain a copy of the book, while still having an opportunity to begin reading it.

Don't forget to check your local libraries (if that is an option). Many libraries (in the US) will do 'inter-library loans'. This means you can request a book and they will find it for you, sometimes even from another state (they will mail it to your local branch). You can also use WorldCat to find El León, La Bruja y El Ropero in a near by library.

Look for a discussion to be posted next week for Chapter 1. I will include some "discussion" questions, but feel free to discuss anything you want from that Chapter.

This discussion will be used for general questions about the book club.

I really look forward to doing this again and hope everyone enjoys it!

If people can find an epub file version of the story, they can use ReadLang. It is a very good resource for reading books on the computer. Click on a word or phrase and the definition appears. There is a free version and a paid version. The paid version is abot $5 every 3 months.

This is a great idea. Thanks for organizing the book club. My Spanish is pretty rusty, and I'm studying something else right now, so I won't be joining you.

But let me point out the audio selection on the page you listed, for people who haven't noticed the link. Click on "Audible Narration..." under the image of the book cover. The narrator, Karl Hoffman, reads so clearly that even I can follow him quite easily. A copy of the written text and the audio would really be a boost for Spanish study. (There may be multiple translations of the book, so the audio and printed text must match, of course.)

You might want to add WorldCat to your resources, or even a direct link to the search results for El León, La Bruja y El Ropero. WorldCat lets you see all of the libraries with copies, sorted by distance, so it's a very useful way to find library books.

I think enough people have shown interest to go ahead and start it full steam. Next week, I will post the official discussion for Chapter 1. In my post above, I have a link to a free copy of chapter 1, so even if you haven't had a chance to locate the book, you can get started.
Once I post the discussion, I will put a note here, so make sure you are following the discussion so you will get the email notification.
I can't wait to get started, this will be a lot of fun!

Count me in! Should we wait to start until we have ten people? Let me know what you think. I can ask Team Spanish if we can temporarily sticky this discussion if in two days we don't have 10 people. I don't know if they'll say yes, but, they might!

PS If people need to, can they read the book in English and discuss it in Spanish? I'm thinking of the folks who are much less exposed to Spanish who would find it easier to come up with a few sentences than to read 15 pages.

I don't think we need a hard set number, but I do like the idea of waiting until we have more people saying they are in (and we can always garner support as we do it), and a sticky would be helpful.. I understand if they wouldn't want to, but if they are willing, that would be great.

I am absolutely up for people participating however the feel most comfortable. I'll go ahead and add something.

I don't think you can do it with the app. I think you have to use a Kindle Touch or Paperwhite. I have used both with success but I have tried the app on a PC and it doesn't support setting a bilingual dictionary as your default.

http://gregreflects.blogspot.com/ - this article echos my own experiences regarding dedicated devices vs. apps.

I have also read that the Kindle Fire does not support setting a bilingual dictionary as your default, but it has been a couple of years since I researched it so that may have changed. Do your homework if you decide to go this route.

https://www.duolingo.com/julie_learns

I think you have to download a Spanish book before you get the option of a bilingual dictionary. Open the book, click on a word, any word, and you'll see that the app has identified it as Spanish. I don't recall this being a normal option in my English books, but I also probably just never paid attention to it. Click on the Spanish box and you'll get this list of various dictionaries. Choose the Spanish - English one, which is near the end. You will then get a notice that "To display definitions, download the free dictionary". Click on the arrow and voilà! Hope this helps!

(P.S. I downloaded one of the free Spanish Kindle books to test this out, just in case. And this is in my iPhone app. I don't know if it would be the same for an iPad.)

I can't speak for iOS, but for Android, you have to rename and replace some dictionary files. I was able to get both my phone's kindle app & my standalone Kindle Fire running a free Spanish→English dictionary this afternoon. The file you have to change would be B005F12G70_EBOK if you are replacing the default Spanish-Spanish dictionary.

I would recommend reading BBC Mundo. There is new material just about every day. If you find yourself regularly reaching for a dictionary, it might be easier to get a ReadLang account. The definition of a word or a phrase is a click away. It's what I'm using to help me get through this book, actually, as I am probably an A1 now and the book is a B1.

[Correction]

¿Cual es tu impresión acerca de las personalidades de los niños y el profesor?

-I use this- I'm using these names because I read it in english. The -professor, He- professor is an -old and white shaggy- old, shaggy, white-haired man, -it is for you have afraid- which is scary. Peter -he is- is -carefully- careful and realistic. Susan -she is- is -carefully- careful and -responsable- responsible. Edmund -he is- is serious and has a bad -caracter- character. -Lucy, She is- Lucy is afraid of the old, but loves the new and looking for -the adventures,- adventures, because when she saw the change -the- of season -into- in the wardrobe, she -continues- continued into the forest but stopped when she saw the -professor and she- professor. She is also the youngest in the group.

¿Cual es la primera cosa que harias en la casa del profesor?

It is -necesary- necessary to know the house, because when you enter -in the other- a new house, you -lost the way- can lose your way and forget how -you return to start again,- to get back to where you started. -it is necesary- It is necessary to put a mark to -return, for knowing the house- return until you know the house.

¿Fue Lucy valiente, tonta o ambos? -it is normally,- Normally, because she is -a- the youngest -and she has a fraid- she is afraid. -but contiunos kwoning the faun and stop when saw the professor.- But, she continued getting to know the faun, instead of stopping like when she saw the professor.

Carlos, you have very good English! ¡Entendí todo!

Carlos, I am going to make some corrections to your paragraph above.

¨I am writing in English because I am learning English. Please help me make any corrections.¨ Here are my responses to the three questions you have posted about the first chapter.

¿Cual es tu impresión acerca de las personalidades de los niños y el profesor? I am using the English names because I am reading it in English. The professor is an old white haired shaggy man. Peter is careful and realistic while Susan is careful and responsible. Edmund is a serious and a bad character. Lucy is afraid of old things but loves new things and is looking for adventure. When she saw the change of the seasons in the wardrobe, she continued into the forest but stopped when saw the professor. She is the youngest the group. ¿Cual es la primera cosa que harias en la casa del profesor? It is necessary to know the house, because when you enter the wardrobe it is easy to lose your way so you must mark your path in order to return the house ¿Fue Lucy valiente, tonta o ambos? She was afraid which makes sense because she was the youngest. However, because she has a sense of adventure she continues on; only stopping when she sees the professor.

I wrote this thinking in English and not Spanish so any suggestions you may have on how I could improve would be appreciated. Thank you.

Carlos, espero que los cambios que hice le ayude. Si no entiende algún cambio que hice ponlo abajo y intentaré explicarlo más claro. Suerte en sus estudios, inglés es difícil conquistar pero no imposible. Pa'lante, pa'lante y nunca pa'tras.

I'm signing up. But as you can see I am not very talented in Spanish, I was wondering if I could have some help from my dad, who might also sign up.

Could this book discussion also benefit beginners? I am very interested because I usually don't show any interest in reading books in different languages, but would appreciate to have others help me with certain words and phrases. Thank You

Maybe you could just keep adding to the Chapter 4 discussion for further chapters. Then we would start our responses with what chapter we are answering. I do want to see this continue.

Having worked in a library it is normal to see drop off of members after the first few meetings but I think there are still a few of us dedicated enough to continue.

Whether or not the book club continues, thank you for organizing it and for helping to motivate me to write in Spanish more regularly.
