"Trochu" is an adverb. We use it A LOT. It does not refer to a short period of time (there are other expressions - a moment=chvíli, for a moment=na chvíli, shortly=krátce, early=brzo), but it refers specifically to a small amount of everything (a bit of milk=trochu mléka; a bit of air=trochu vzduchu; a bit of time=trochu času; Do you like her? Yes, a little.=Líbí se ti? Jo, trochu.). You can also use it whenever it is possible to use word "slightly" in English (I came slightly late.=Přišel jsem trochu pozdě.)
Děkuji za bezvadné vysvětlení. Je teda možné říct: I came late a bit.? Zní mi to divně, ale to jen proto, že neumím anglicky dobře. A jaký je rozdíl mezi touto větou a větou I came a little late? Znamená to 'a bit' něco jako: ale jenom trochu a 'a little late' je prostě konstatování (bez výmluvy) nebo je to totéž?
"Si" and "se" are reflexive pronouns. "Se" for direct objects and "si" for indirect objects. Roughly they correspond to "myself", "yourself", etc. But as you can see here, they are much more widely used than their English counterparts. There are dialects of English which follow Czech usage more closely than standard English does. Growing up in the southeast of the US I wouldn't have been been surprised to hear "I'm going to read me a book", with the "me" playing the same role as the "si" in "Trochu si čteme." But in Czech this usage is standard, while in English it is very far from standard.
Actually here's a better way to explain it. Bobek is not wrong but there's more to it than that. If you look at the sentence "I bake a cake for Bob", bake is the verb and there are two objects. The direct object is what is receiving the action whereas the indirect object is affected by the action but is not what the action is being done on. In this example, the cake is the direct object because that's what's being baked. Bob is affected by the baking because he is receiving the product, but you're not baking Bob. Hope this helps!
