Is it just me? I hear "Um leão" on the fast version, but "O leão" on the slow version.

The fast version does say "O leão", however the neutral "O" sound in portuguese is quite similar to "U". That's why the slower version is easier to understand. It's a matter of practice and getting used.

You can tell it's not "um" because the "M" sound is completely absent.
