So am I right in assuming this might be used when, say, you do something for someone and they give you a whole homemade apple pie in return? Kind of like an "aw, you shouldn't have"?

Yeah, I agree, I can't imagine saying the English sentence. On the other hand, I got it right, so that means I was able to literally translate the Esperanto sentence into English. pats self on back
