French Chat Club
Bonjour Duolingo Members! I'm IsabelleMay, and I will be creating a French Chat Club! I have already made one in German, so you can join at this link if you're learning German as well.
Where will the club be held?
The club will be held on Wire. If you do not already have an account you can make one, then add me (my username is the same as on Duolingo). If you do, you can just add me. When you add me, please be sure to include that you are a member of the French Chat Club on Duolingo.
What will we do in the club?
In the chat club, we will first watch an episode of a French TV series, and at the end of the week, you must write a 3 paragraph essay about the show in French and send it to me. After that, we will talk about the show as a group, or with each other, in French.
Members with different levels do different things in the club. The show you watch and the length of essay depend on your tier in the club. Also, people in the same tier will chat with each other about the show. You are placed in a tier by your Duolingo level. Here are the different tiers:
Red Tier: Level 1 & 2
Orange Tier: Level 3-6
Yellow Tier: Level 7-9
Green Tier: Level 10-14
Blue Tier: Level 15-17
Indigo Tier: Level 18-21
Violet Tier: Level 22-25
Essay lengths differ based on tier. In the Red Tier, for example, members must write an essay with at least 1 paragraph. Orange Tier members must write at least 2 paragraphs, and so on. If you need help writing your essay, feel free to ask with someone with a higher level. There is no penalty for collaboration.
I will send all members the link to the show. In a week, you must send me your essay on Wire. Based on your quality and length, you will receive lingots. A poor essay will only receive 1 lingot, and an outstanding essay will receive 10. I will send you the lingots via your sign-up comment.
After all essays are submitted, the members of each tier will talk with each other about the show they watched (you must type in French, unless there is a word you do not know or understand). The head of each tier has the option to pair members of their tier up, or they can chat with the whole group.
Remember, be nice to your fellow club members. Encourage each other do a great job and learn as much as possible. If you know of any helpful sites, let me know and I will send the link to all the club members.
This program will start on August 1st, and last for 8 weeks. To join, make a comment including your username and level, and pay 2 lingots. Once you join, there are no refunds! No spam, please! If you have any questions, you can post on my stream. I hope this will be a great opportunity to learn new things and expand our knowledge of the French language.
Okay I want to give this a try. I created a Wire account, Lrtward. I've given you some lingots, too. I don't care what tier you put me into. Duo shows me as 18 in the forums but when I look at my own XP I'm at 24. So wherever you want to put me, indigo or violet, is fine.
Since you say that there is no penalty for collaborating on our essay writing; I was wondering if it would be okay for me to submit my essay on Lang-8 and get corrections and suggestions there before I turn it in to you?
I don't care about being awarded any lingots; I just want a compelling reason to force myself to branch out into other ways of learning French besides Duolingo. Watching videos and writing paragraphs is exactly what I need!
I love this idea but am not sure that I'm comfortable that my level matches my progression on my tree. I spend a lot of time practicing during down time at work so my XP gets inflated a little more than if I were to just go straight through the tree. Would it be possible for me to join at a lower tier?
i would like to join. i really love the idea. but i am just afraid of not being able to do it, i just don't think i'm good enough, ready, to write essays, paragraphs in French. At the same time, i find it a good way for improvement. Plus, will i be kicked out of the club if i don't send, write my essay at the appointed time? and if i just couldn't do it, is it okay if i left the club?
Watch that negative self talk, it'll destroy you. Many of us are complete beginners at French, but we're willing to practice, learn, and help each other. There will be words, phrases, and concepts you won't understand so easily—we all experience that—but don't be so quick to quit. We're all here to help each other. I know with enough practice and consistency, you'll be able to speak fluently. Bienvenue Adearema!
Thank you Elizabeth ! this is a GREAT idea. I look forward to joining in - in a couple of months time. Thanks for the diversity in the culture of Doulingo you are developing. It makes me sad I can not join now. But it is something to look forward to for me to engage in as soon as I am clear of some real life stuff. Thanks for the joy of looking forward you are giving me :)
With my greatest respect,
Your admiring friend Roo.
