Cuál vs Qué?
Hola amigos, I'd like to know the difference between Cuál and qué? Gracias
Qué is used when asking for definitions.
¿Qué es una ciudad? What is a city?
Cuál usually is used before es and other forms of ser when not seeking a definition:
¿Cuál es tu número de teléfono? What is your phone number?
Cuál is also used to suggest a selection or choice from among a group:
¿Cuál miras? Which one are you looking at? But, ¿Qué miras? What are you looking at?
Your last example makes it clear that qué is not just asking for definitions (though certainly that, too).
It seems as though 'qué' is for more concrete 'what' questions, and 'cuál' for more general ones. ("Qué dijiste?" but maybe "Cuál pienses?") I feel like I'm starting to get a bit of an intuitive sense of when to use one or the other, but I would really love to have someone fully fluent/proficient answer the OP.
Your absolutly right, that was an over generalization on my part. While you do make some good observations, I must say that "Cual piensas" is wrong. It will have to be be "Que piensas?"=What do you think.
This is because Qué has some idiomatic uses that you will likely have to learn by heart.
Such as these: ¿Qué hora es? What time is it? ¡Qué lástima! What a shame! ¡Qué hermoso! How beautiful! ¡Qué día más horrible! What a horrible day! ¡Qué susto! What a fright! ¡Qué bonito! How pretty! ¿Qué tanto? How much? ¿Y qué? ¿Y a mí qué? So what? ¿Para qué? ¿Por qué? Why?
