Is the definite article really necessary in this sentence? If one is talking about love in general (where is love), it seems to me that you would still say "hvor er kjærligheten" in Norwegian, rather than "hvor er kjærlighet".

It's true that general things are often definite in Norwegian, so 'kjærlighet' would sound wrong, at least in this case. But I think the English sentence is a reference to a popular song, so I don't think that should be changed either.

Does the word cover just romantic love, or could you say it in the way we say "i love my family" "i love my friends" "i love dogs"
