How would one say "There was playing in the garden."? Would it be something like "Er is in de tuin gespeeld geworden.", or something similar?

Yes, that's right, but I read in another post that the 'geworden' at the end is considered archaic in Standard Dutch.

That is indeed archaic. The modern version would be 'er werd in de tuin gespeeld'

yard and garden are synonyms, if you want to specify the garden in front or back of a house, then you use "voortuin" and "achtertuin", "in de tuin" often refers to the back garden.
