It's very normal in Scotland and and Ireland to say "it was a sin" meaning "it was a shame".
We say this in Italian, too: "È un peccato".

I have often heard Danes use the past (var) in this expression. "Nåååå det var synd!" Even when referring to a present situation, so should we be allowed to translate this as "it is a shame that you couldn't come." ?
