Does anyone have suggestions of websites, etc, that I could find Norwegian shows with English subtitles, or vice versa? I'm leaving for Norway in January as an exchange student and I need to learn as much as possible before then :)
My favorite Norwegian show is i Kveld med Ylvis (a comedy/talk show, like a mix of Jimmy Fallon and Ellen DeGeneres), you can find many bits and pieces of their shows scattered on YouTube, but these websites have links to full episodes on YouTube with English subtitles:
- Ylvis in English - ALL
- IKMY Season 4
- IKMY Season 3
- IKMY Season 1 - these ones are all fully subtitled, so they make a great starting point
Here are some of my favorite videos to get you started:
I'm assuming since you're old enough to go on exchange that you can handle a little swearing here and there, but as a heads-up I'll let you know that language isn't censored on IKMY.
You're so lucky you get to go to Norway! Hope you have fun and learn a lot!
PS Click the "cc" in the bottom right for subtitles.
Depending where you live in this world, you might have access to a few show on Netflix with Norwegian audio and/or subtitles.
Yes, The Trollhunter is on Netflix in the US certainly, and is a Norwegian film albeit with English subtitles. It's not even as bad as you might think either.
You can find episodes of "Alt for norge" on youtube if you are lucky.
It is a reality show where Americans with Norwegian ancestry come to Norway and compete with each other, the winner gets to meet their Norwegian family.
It's not a serious show, actually it is quite silly and funny.Though there's always crying involved when one needs to go back home of course.
There's been 5 seasons so far, and I believe the 6th season is coming this fall.
Takk! I'm in the US. Closest thing I've found is this really awkward cartoon on youtube, and Lilyhammer on Netflix which has a guy moving to Norway and he learns Norwegian, so that was okish. I'll find that video on youtube, it's too funny not to watch!
Since you're in the US, I will recommend MHZ Networks which shows European mystery/detective shows each evening with English subs. They sometimes have Norwegian programs. Note the programs are repeated so the block from 9-11 EDT (6-8 PDT) repeats at 12-2 EDT (9-11 PDT). http://www.mhznetworks.com/schedule
or find the local TV channel http://www.mhznetworks.com/mhz-worldview/affiliates
or sometimes when they have the rights you can watch programs on demand for 1 week after they were shown on TV here: http://www.mhznetworks.org/programs/full-episodes
This has all been free and without commercials, but they also sell some DVDs and are planning to introduce a premium subsription service and other options too.
I will mention that some of the themes are of an adult nature involving murder and crime and some programs can be dark with creepy criminals. (If these were movies, probably R-rated.)
The next Norwegian program scheduled is:
