Why is the accusative being used here? Is it a shortened expression, like "Good night" for "Have a good night"?

'sonĝo' is what happens when you're asleep.
'revo' is a daydream.

For me, daydream has a certain connotation of not being important, just a pleasant diversion. So while I agree that revo could be a daydream, I think it can also be used to talk about desires and aspirations, such as I dream of being a successful businessman.
