Duolingo is the most popular way to learn languages in the world. Best of all, it's 100% free!

I finished the tree, then went back until all the lessons are gold but it still shows only 51%... Does anyone ever get to 100%?

Most people think the fluency % is basically meaningless. It is somehow based on how well Duo thinks you know the words Duo teaches. It has little to do with how well you can communicate in the "real" world. Finishing a tree means you are only at an "advanced beginner" point in a language.

I think it's impossible but 51% it's a good percentage! nobody knows all the words of a language not even the native speakers. I'm at 59% at English.

but i think the question is why does one get a fluency of only 51% for finishing the tree? if you finish the tree, why not 100%? that would be my question.

Finishing the tree doesn't mean you can't level up in a language anymore. There are still plenty of things to do. I would suggest trying the immersion feature if you haven't already.

In any case Duolingo teaches more translation skills more than language speaking abilities. I am very fluent in Spanish, use it very day, with my percentage of only 51%. In Italian and German I am in the mid 40's, same level however I think that I would really have a lot of trouble having a significant conversation. They should really have a more significant way of calculating their percentage.

I've been going over a year now. Since they've added that feature I've hovered at around 55%. Oddly sometimes before I've met my daily challenge I'll be at 55% and after I'll be at 54% (this has happened even when I've answered 20 correct in one run of timed practice!) I'm not sure how it's computed.

[ETA: Congratulations on finishing your tree!]

I really don't understand fluency. I have been learning Spanish for some time and duolingo for about 10months (with a 5 week break while I was away). When fluency first appeared I was 16% which I thought was low, the following day it became 5% and is now after weeks is 6% !!!!! I am on a 57day streak so have been not exactly slacking. I just ignore it now as I think it will never move. It must be the lowest fluency on record.

I have 288 day streak (which is only from lessons as I don't use immersion). My tree is all golden except for three lessons. I have finished the tree at least twice. My fluency is 5%. The more I learn the less I know -according to the fluency shield.

This makes me feel so much better. There is now an elite group of members who as they learn more know less. I do like Duolingo and my Spanish has improved since I began using it, but it is important to use other ways of learning as well - audio, conversation (where possible), films and on line resources.

Mine has a glitch or something. It is meaningless. I'm doing German and I totally finished the entire tree and it showed 3%!!! Now I've gone back and reviewed and got way over half of the finished tree totally gold and it has jumped way up to 4%! It has never been higher no matter what I do. ROFLOL!

Mine is at 49%, and I've only completed about 2/3 of the tree. I don't know how it works either.
