Use of 'erhöhen'.

As well as being used in the sense of 'to raise prices', can I use 'erhöhen' in a similar way to 'I raised it over my head', or am I better off using 'heben' in that situation?

You'd be better off with heben.

Erhöhen in any other context than price/rates/stuff along those lines sounds just plain wrong to my (native) ears, and I would more think of it as heightening something (as in lengthening the legs of a chair to make it a bit higher), not actually lifting something in any way.

Hope this helps =)

Yes, erhöhen is more increase than raise.

"Increase" would probably be a less confusing translation for "erhöhen". You usually use "erhöhen" when something grows in number or, more rarely, gets taller..

Die Preise erhöhen - Raise in Price

Das Risiko erhöhen - Increase the risk

Die Anzahl der Angestellten erhöhen - Increase the number of employees

Den Deich erhöhen- Enlargen the ❤❤❤❤

You might also find it in older textsm, especially religious ones, where it is used to indicate that someone iss elevated to a higher rank or even state of being, but nowadays the word isn't used this way anymore.
