Ok. I could use some help with these "............ som helst" expressions. I am having a terribly hard time trying to understand them. Can someone please explain it? thank you.

Generally these would apply, but some may have several translation.

  • hva som helst = anything

  • hvor som helst = anywhere

  • hvem som helst = anyone

  • hvilken som helst = whichever

  • hva som helst = anything/whatever (not as in "whatever, dude")

'Hvordan som helst' doesn't work, though.

I might have missed some, but these should cover the most important ones.

Når som helst = anytime :)

Could you give any kind of word-by-word translation? What is the etymology of helst? som = as, like, one so am I close with these? hva som helst = what one prefers = no preference regarding what = whatever hvor som helst - where one prefers = no preference regarding location = wherever hvem som helst = whom one prefers = no preference regarding person = whomever/whoever hvilken som helst = which one prefers= no preference between choices = whichever når som helst = when one prefers = no preference regarding time = whenever

"i can really sleep everywhere" isn't an acceptable translation? That makes no sense to me.

Anywhere isn't the same as everywhere.

Could you also say Jeg kan absolutt sove hvor som helst, "I can absolutely/definitely sleep anywhere"? Takk

yeah, i'd guess so
