Weekly Discussion Post 10-21-13
This week’s topics are:
Fix robotic voices
There have been numerous complaints about the terrible robotic voices for some of the languages here on Duolingo. Recently experiencing this for myself, I saw how bad the problem really was. Most complaints are made concerning the Italian and Portuguese computer voices, but every once in a while there are complaints about the German and French as well. Here are some of the complaints- http://www.duolingo.com/comment/176374$from_skill=051224e6e1ccb44ada4c0b0485e53635 http://www.duolingo.com/comment/927094$from_skill=051224e6e1ccb44ada4c0b0485e53635 http://www.duolingo.com/comment/292567$from_skill=051224e6e1ccb44ada4c0b0485e53635 http://www.duolingo.com/comment/364343 http://www.duolingo.com/comment/942319 http://www.duolingo.com/comment/219896 http://www.duolingo.com/comment/266427 http://www.duolingo.com/comment/264638 http://www.duolingo.com/comment/112988 http://www.duolingo.com/comment/801624 http://www.duolingo.com/comment/82579 http://www.duolingo.com/comment/896250 http://www.duolingo.com/comment/5927 http://www.duolingo.com/comment/920960 http://www.duolingo.com/comment/147314 http://www.duolingo.com/comment/104189
Microphone too generous
There have been multiple complaints concerning the microphone recording being too lenient as well. At times the mic. will allow answers that are nowhere near the correct answer. For example (This was taken from Spanish) someone could say ‘Los gatos bebe la leche’ and the correct answer would be ‘Las gatas bebe es leche’ or they could say ‘Mis gatos come mis pantelones’ and the correct answer would be ‘Mis gatos come mi pescado’ but it would still be counted as correct. Other times it would count the correct answer as wrong. This happens often and it causes the user to get confused. If this cannot be fixed, I propose that there being a ‘retry’ or ‘redo’ button that we can push when it is incorrect so that we may try saying it again. Some other posts concerning this-
As you may have read in my last post and several other posts, we have a shortage of moderators. So I and others have suggested that ‘trustworthy’ people be chosen as ‘mod helpers’ to help go through discussions and get rid of spam, offensive comments, comments that ‘clog’ up the discussion ect. Some may argue that this would cause more problems because these ‘helpers’ could delete a bunch of comments for no reason and cause more conflict. One way to keep this from happening is for the ‘mod helpers’ to go through and see where the comments are and copy the URLs of the discussion page to send it to the mods specifying which comment/comments it is and they can look at them and decide whether or not it needs deleted. That way, the mods would not have to search for the comments themselves and missing many that should be deleted.
There has been talk of how Duolingo will teach languages with a different writing style. Many have suggested a second tree. With two trees, the spoken part of the language could be put on the first tree and the written part on the second. Making two rather than one will allow users to continue in the spoken part of the language if the get ‘stuck’ in the written part. Not every one wants to learn the written part so adding this will allow them to learn the language without having to learn what they do not want to. Here is one of the discussions covering this topic- http://www.duolingo.com/comment/970619
What if there were weekly or monthly language contests? What do I mean by this? Well, what if, every week/month on Duolingo a contest were held for lingots or skill points? Things like crosswords and word searches in each language could be posted for the lower levels and an immersion article in each language for the higher levels. The first person able to complete their chosen puzzle with the correct translations would get lingots or skill points.
“That’s all for now folks”
Feel free to comment below, if you have any questions I will answer them to the best of my ability. I will also gladly accept any ideas for next weeks topics! :D
Thanks for your feedback Annie :) I think the contests would add more variety to Duo.

You can already do it...
Well, I was just saying that, IMO, we don't need a special status to do it.
I have not checked my discussion in a few days, nor did I receive an alert saying that you had posted so I apologize for not responding sooner. Yes, anyone can post something on the mods streams, but because it is not their ‘job’ they are only posting when they happen to see a comment; therefore missing many rude and offensive comments and as AnnieN82 said, not many people do it. It would be however, the ‘mod helpers’ ‘job’ to go through all the discussion posts and comments, finding the ones that need deleted. Also note that I said that sending the URLs was an alternative, if, the ‘mod helpers’ deleting became a problem.
Oh, yes why not, but I just don't think people will do it more (long term speaking) if they've been "upgraded" to some status or not.
It would be enough, I think to have some guidance explaining that if you see a bad comment, you're welcome to send a message (on her/his stream) to your favourite moderator and if it's also the original message of a discussion that should be deleted then send it to support since Moderators can't delete an entire discussion (i.e. the original post and everything).
Given the number we are, I'm quiet sure that it would be clean easily if people knew what to do in such case.
There are many people who have not been given a 'status' that do do this however (Not very many) and have been for a while. And again, as I said, it was an alternative, so they could just delete offensive or rude comments.
Italian has the worst voice. Am not trying Portuguese yet, but I can vouch for Italian being the worst one on here, I'm learning German, French, Italian & Spanish & Italian is just awful!
As far as the microphone being too generous - actually that is a good aspect imho, because there are many times that I've had to say something over and over and over and OVER, so "too generous" is a good thing.
How do I get your "weekly discussions"? I'd like to be part of them.
The "over and over" was mentioned as "other times it would mark the correct answer as wrong". But, If you follow me it should show when I post them on your stream. Btw, what do you mean by "be a part of them"?
