Any good French movies?
So..the weekend's coming up and I need some movies to watch. Any suggestions for a French movie?
I don't know whether you have Netflix or not, but there are a fair amount of French movies on there. (But they only have English subtitles). Some good ones I have watched are: Amelie, Populaire, Renoir, The War of the Buttons, The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec, The Chorus, The Well-Diggers Daughter, and The Rabbi's Cat. Those are just to name a few, there are many others if you look.
If you don't have Netflix and are looking for French movies in French with French subtitles, check this website out! http://www.filmfra.com/
The Hola extension for Google Chrome is good for tricking Netflix into thinking one's from France! :)
I would advise staying away from Hola. This site details why:
I really like Les Choristes. If you've ever watched the Le Petit Nicolas cartoons, you'll probably like the live action version. Both movies are very funny.
L’Auberge Espagnole is a great one! Also, I believe there are two other movies to go along with it. :)
My favourite French movies are "Asterix et Obelix: Mission Cleopatre" and "Intouchables". They both are nice movies, if you want to laugh, Asterix and Obelix is excellent, if you're searching for a more serious movie, Intouchables is great choice :)
Oh yes, Mission Cleopatre is one my favourite movies of all time, not only French ones! :)
Are you in the UK? There is currently a French language show on Channel 4 every wednesday. It is a dark, intense police drama called "Witnesses" (Les Temoins). It is pretty good but it is half way through the series now. I'm suprised it hasn't already been mentioned somewhere on here. I'm sure it would be easy to find online or whatever.
I just double checked, it is on at 10 o'clock on wednesday nights. I think there are only a couple of episodes left now (the others might be on 4OD?). It hasn't been promoted that well unlike before when Channel 4 showed The Returned (another great French language series). I usually record it and watch it later. I hope enough people have watched it for Channel 4 to show another French series. I'd really recommend it, although it is quite a dark programme, lots of murders and stuff.
Bob le Flambeur!!! It's the best heist movie ever! Although Rififi might also be the best heist movie ever... Girl on the Bridge is my favorite French romantic movie. All of the movies are fabulously filmed, also. If you like film noir, I'd consider Alphaville, which is my favorite Godard. Of course, Amelie is also super fun, but chances are you've seen that already, as I think it had a more international audience. Have fun whatever you watch! I love movies!!!!!!!!!!!
"Vivre Sa Vie" is my favourite but it's kind of artsy -- it's by Godard -- so definitely not for everyone.
The only more recent French film I've seen is "La Vie D'Adele" ("Blue Is The Warmest Colour" in English -- not a direct translation lol) which is on Netflix and is pretty decent. Beware tons of sex scenes if you're watching in a public place!
I'm more into tv-shows, you may like Kaboul Kitchen, Braquo, Maison close, Hard, Tunnel.
I also like shorter lengths, including TV-shows, short comedy monologues and sketches, trailers, and special features, including bloopers, travel features, documentaries about science and nature, and interviews. Songs and poems have been mentioned already. What length? 5-30 minutes. I think the commentaries about movies and the way they are made are as interesting as the movies themselves. Thanks for the links which already exist.
You Could download Hollywood movies with french voices from this site : just write VOSTR in google and it will show up........ :)
I don't know why, but that made me think of Kaamelott, which is a serie of short length comedy (that's dead funny if you like french humor) taking place during the reign of King Arthur.
Some of my favourite French movies are Intouchables, La rafle, Le père noël est une ordure, Astérix et Obélix Mission Cléopatre, Polisse...
Amélie, them songs oh my god thank you Tierssen. Intouchables, and I like Samba too. Some movie about a guy who accidentally gets shot, loses his identity because everyone thought he was dead and then because a hobo, can't remember the name of the film but it's a really funny one.
