Formatting Codes Guide

Hello There! This post is for new users or users that have no clue how to do this. This guide will show how to put in pictures, italicize, or both together!

Alright, first with the basics.

Bold is **Bold** Italicize is *Italicize*

And there's also quoting! >Hello Everybody! Nice to Meet You! Becomes this:

Hello Everybody! Nice to Meet You!

Once done with the quoting, you don't need to add another >, just write a new line.

Next are pictures and links.

Linking A URL: [Click Here](http://duolingo.com) becomes: Click Here

Or, [Text You Want Displayed](URL)

Image Linking: ![ ](http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130606165306/animalcrossing/images/4/41/Chicken.jpg) becomes

or ![ ](Image URL)

Lists * Test 1 * test 2 becomes:

  • Test 1

  • Test 2

Remember to put a space after the star, otherwise the list won't work.

Another few things I show you before is the bold and the italic. It's ***Italics and Bold*** or Italics and Bold

Oh and one more thing! If you highlight and try to bold/italicize at the same time, the highlight would work but the bold/italicize won't! So be careful!

There's the guide! I hoped it helped and feel free to test this stuff in the chat! Thanks! And Always, Good Luck With Your Studies Everyone! :D

Great info! Should be stickied.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/fr224

What does "sticky" mean? I've seen it around here.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/davidcwalls

The staff and (I think) moderators can mark important posts as Sticky, which keeps them at the top of the forum. For example, if you look in the Duolingo forum, the top post should be about the Duolingo Wiki, and it should have a tag that says "Sticky"

Thanks To All Who Have Read This Guide! It Really Means A Lot To Me!

You are welcome! And, thank you for following me! You are a *legend*!!!!!

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/SpOoOoOk

I forget to metion, if you try to italicize or bold with highlight it won't work!

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/BastouXII

It's because it's not actually meant to be highlighted, it's meant for code : it puts your text in a uniform font without any formatting. Its primary use is to post code without worrying about it looking weird.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Sleepynatural

    Well, you learn from mistakes!

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/SpOoOoOk

yeah :) I added it to the guide

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Ifphigenia

Thanks, this is very useful. Now another quick question, how do you do the highlighting? . Thanks again :-))

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/SpOoOoOk

Ok, here's how! There's a button to the left of the one. It's a button with this ~ and `

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/SpOoOoOk

that little dot is put on each side of a word or sentence and you got it highlighted!

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/SpOoOoOk

hello world and everyone on it!

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Ifphigenia

Thanks again, I've always wondered how to do that.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/SpOoOoOk

put the tick on the otherside too :) hi

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Pratyush.

I like highlight but I want Highlights to be in some appeasing color , Yellow seems like sick to me.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Jonathangrant00

testing Thanks for this useful to know

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Catriona28475

That will depend on your language-specific keyboard layout.
My keyboard is for Swedish (so there are keys for å, ä and ö) and I haven't found the ` key yet. I was able to copy-paste yours though.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/luminary23

Just testing and thanks for the tip! :D

P.S. For clarification, it's the ` key, as mentioned by @BastouXII

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/BastouXII

Put your text between back ticks (grave accents) : `Text` becomes Text.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Sleepynatural

Same question... but for the information given, very useful.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Sleepynatural

    Thanks for the answer!

    Try over a year ago.

Topics like this tend to pop up over and over again as new users come to the site. It's nice that they do, but it's always best to link back to the original thread to give credit. Especially when the text is a virtual carbon-copy of the old thread.

Remember to put a space after the star, otherwise the list won't work.

It seems your list didn't work either way haha

    • That's funny
    • Isn't it?

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/SpOoOoOk

    I fixed it though.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/quin_john
    • stuff
    • more stuff

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/quin_john

    >Hello Everybody! Nice to Meet You

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Feeniqs

    What about the line?

There are so many discussions about these. I think at least one, the most informative one, should be stickied. Or this information should just be provided at some point in the the page.

By the way, why that specific picture?

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/fr224

I know this is a pretty old post, but does anyone know of a way to put in photos that you have saved to your computer?

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/writchie4

You'll have to upload them to an image hosting website. I like imgur.com, but there are several others available like photobucket, flickr, tinypic, etc.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/timwe

You might also be able to use the data uri scheme, but that should probably be limited to small images only.

    >Thank you so much!

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Catriona28475

Just testing the URL link instruction:

    • It looks like a space between the ] and ( , but maybe it needs to be clarified that it doesn't work unless you put ]( together with no space.

Is it possible to create a literal asterisk with \*?

    Let's try it: *

    Yep.
